How to get paid faster as a freelancer

Getting paid faster isn’t about chasing harder — it’s about removing every bit of friction and delay between finishing the work and the money landing. Here’s what actually moves the needle.

Set it up so you get paid sooner

  1. Invoice immediately. The clock only starts when you send the invoice — so send it the moment the work or milestone is done, not at month-end.
  2. Shorten your terms. NET 14 (or even NET 7) gets you paid sooner than NET 30. State an exact due date, not just “NET 30”. See payment terms explained.
  3. Take a deposit. Getting 30–50% up front improves cash flow and filters out flaky clients — how to ask for a deposit.
  4. Bill in milestones. For longer projects, invoice at stages instead of one lump at the end, so money comes in throughout.

Make paying effortless

  1. Add a payment link. One click beats “what are your bank details?”. Offer the methods your clients prefer.
  2. Invoice the right person. Send it to whoever actually pays (often accounts payable), and confirm they received it.
  3. Get the invoice right first time. A correct, complete invoice can’t be queried and parked — use the invoice generator and the checklist.

Add gentle pressure and incentives

  1. Follow up on a schedule. A reminder before the due date and again the day it’s due prevents most lateness. Use the reminder templates or the AI reminder writer.
  2. Spell out late fees. Knowing interest accrues is a quiet incentive to pay on time — agree it in the contract and quantify with the late fee calculator.

Measure it
